Cavalier After Franz Hals

The 'Laughing Cavalier' by Franz Hals is one of my favourite paintings. I decided to create a 3d version in terracotta clay.

I had to develop a technique to render the fine detail of the embroidery in terracotta. It was rewarding to expand my control of the material.

This was one of those lucky pieces where everything goes right - even the challenging aspects. It almost seemed to make itself.

The painting by Franz Hals is hung in the Wallace Collection in London. I would recommend a visit.

This piece is a handmade one-off original in terracotta.
